What Is Preventive Dentistry?

Preventative dentistry may also be referred to as general dentistry or family dentistry. Preventative dentistry is focused on preventing oral health conditions such as cavities, gum disease, infections, tooth loss, and excessive wear on the teeth. Moreover, preventative dentistry helps to ensure that patients maintain excellent oral health, thereby reducing risks to overall wellness.

Poor oral health has been linked with many chronic, serious, and potentially life-threatening conditions. As such, Dr. Awad takes time during each appointment to educate patients on the best ways to care for their teeth and gums.

Comprehensive Evaluation / Oral Examination

During an oral exam, Dr. Awad will look for potential threats to your oral health including abnormal changes in soft tissues, abnormal bone structure, tooth decay, signs of infection, teeth at risk of cavities, weakened teeth, cracks in teeth, potential problems with tooth alignment or crowding, malocclusion (overbite, underbite, etc.). Periodically, digital images will be taken during your oral exam.

Dental Cleaning

Having your teeth cleaned by the dentist twice yearly removes the plaque and bacteria that build up between dental appointments. This helps prevent cavities from forming. Your teeth will be cleaned, flossed, and polished during your appointment.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a fast, painless, noninvasive preventative treatment that protects teeth with deep grooves from bacteria and plaque accumulation.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatments help protect weak teeth from decay, chips, fractures, and cracks in teeth.

Custom Oral Appliances

Using painless digital impressions, Dr. Awad can create have a custom mouthguard fabricated to fit snugly over your teeth. Custom mouthguards better protect your teeth and mouth while playing sports when compared to store-bought mouthguards. We also create custom nightguards to help alleviate TMJ pain and bruxism.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical procedure used to treat gum disease. During the scaling process, specialized dental instruments are used to remove dental plaque and calculus from beneath the gums. Planing is the procedure used to smooth the tooth roots after the scaling process. Root planing helps the gums heal and reattach themselves to a cleaner and smoother root surface.

Custom Nightguards

Night guards serve two primary functions. They protect your teeth from excessive wear due to clenching or teeth grinding (bruxism).  Custom night guards also help mitigate painful symptoms of TMJ due to bruxism.

Periodontal Maintenance

Home care is an extremely important part of maintaining healthy teeth and gums, but even excellent home care cannot prevent bacteria and plaque. If the plaque is not removed, it can harden, becoming calculus. Our experienced team offers exceptional periodontal maintenance to keep your smile healthy and to treat gum disease in the mouth.

During your visit, our team will perform an oral examination as well as an oral hygiene cleaning.

We will recommend a maintenance program that is best for you based on how quickly you develop calculus and your past and current periodontal health.

During maintenance appointments, we will perform a visual inspection to detect any cavities, abnormalities in existing dental restorations, and any new gum and bone recession. Digital x-rays may also be taken when deemed appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Preventive Dentistry

How long does a comprehensive oral exam take at the dentist?
The oral exam does not take long. Your dentist may spend 10 minutes viewing and examining the inside of your mouth. However, they will also take time to review your digital X-rays, digital scans of your mouth, and review your oral health history.
How do custom night guards treat TMJ?
Custom night guards prevent you from clenching and grinding which puts strain on the temporomandibular joint (jaw joint). The strain on that joint due to pressure or inflammation from arthritis is a leading cause of TMJ.
If my dentist finds a cavity will it be treated during the same appointment?
Occasionally a small cavity may be able to be filled during a regular dental exam, but this depends on the dentist’s schedule that day. Most of the time, you’ll need to return for a follow-up appointment.
What are the signs that my child needs fluoride treatment?
Most children benefit from fluoride treatments. Fluoride treatments may prevent up to 90% of cavities in children. Signs of fluoride deficiency include white spots on the teeth due to demineralization, tooth decay, or weak teeth that chip easily.
Are twice-yearly dental appointments really necessary?
Twice yearly dental exams and cleanings are recommended for maintaining good oral health. However, you should never feel judged or shamed about missing appointments. Even if you haven’t been to the dentist in years, it’s always better to go late, than never.
Why would I need a custom night guard?
If your dentist recommends a night guard it is because there are signs of excessive wear on the teeth, indicating clenching or grinding at night. This can not only damage teeth but also put a strain on the jaw joint, which can lead to symptoms of TMJ disorders.
Are dental sealants safe for children?
Yes. Dental sealants are made from composite resin and have been deemed safe preventative treatments by both the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Dental Association (ADA).
Are sports mouth guards from the dentist better than store-bought guards?
If you or your child plays any sports, you should invest in a custom mouthguard. Because they are custom-made for your teeth they fit snugly, feel more comfortable, and offer better protection from dental trauma than store-bought sports guards.
